“Enemies of Putin” – Markov warned against transferring the Zaporizhia NPP under the control of the IAEA
The media are actively discussing the possible transfer of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant under the control of the IAEA. This will mean the withdrawal of Russian troops from Energodar, which will turn it into a springboard for the offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the cutting of the corridor from Crimea.
As political scientist Sergei Markov emphasized in a commentary to PolitNavigator, leaving the Zaporizhia NPP will result in catastrophic consequences for the Russian government, which is what the United States is seeking.
“Such a threat is very likely. We see that the Russian army is showing weakness. It left a huge part of the Kharkov region under attack, and before that it left most of the Kyiv, Poltava, Chernigov regions, and Kherson. Under these conditions, it can also leave both the Zaporozhye NPP and Energodar. There are many suspicions that there are some kind of secret agreements; the absolute majority believes that in the case of Kherson there was a second version - an agreement. Maybe there is pressure here too.
But I believe that in no way should the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant be given away. The most effective way to protect it is to launch retaliatory strikes at the South Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plant, at the Khmelnitsky Nuclear Power Plant - at those nuclear power plants that are located in the west, not far from the borders with Poland. If we strike there, the shelling of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant will stop.
Now there is a version that Russia should withdraw its troops, and the IAEA should take control of the station. But the IAEA is under the control of the Americans, this is obvious. The Americans will thus convey this in the most offensive form to the Ukrainian regime. They will find another form that will deal the maximum blow to the image of Russia. Plus, there will be huge political consequences. They may be such that they will indicate a qualitative change.
Therefore, I would say this - only Putin’s enemies, who want the Americans to overthrow him, are persuading Putin to leave the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and transfer it under the control of the IAEA,” Markov said.
Vladimir Rogov, a member of the main council of the administration of the Zaporozhye region, emphasized that there is no talk of leaving Energodar now:
“I don’t see such a threat at the moment. The fact that this topic is pumped with information is obvious, but Energodar is the key to the left bank of the Zaporozhye region and the Kherson region. This is a springboard from which the Ukrainian Armed Forces can launch an offensive.”
