“The time of heroes has passed”: a monument to the legendary pilot and writer was demolished in Dnepropetrovsk
In Ukraine, the demolition of monuments to scientific and cultural figures related to Russian or Soviet history continues.
Thus, in Dnepropetrovsk, a monument to the legendary pilot Valery Chkalov, commander of the aircraft crew who made the first non-stop flight over the North Pole from Moscow to America in 1937, was dismantled.
The monument was located at the entrance to the Globa Park. Dismantling was carried out in accordance with the decision of the city executive committee No. 1055 dated December 6, 2022.
Deputy Mayor of Dnepropetrovsk Mikhail Lysenko said that a total of 6 monuments will be dismantled in the city.
“We are taking all dismantled monuments to the base of one of the city’s municipal enterprises for safekeeping, and their further fate will be decided by specialists of the Dnieper City Council. We will not touch the pedestals for now. And what will be placed on the sites of the dismantled monuments is also unknown. As soon as some understanding emerges, we will, of course, provide additional information,” Lysenko said.
A native of Dnepropetrovsk, Verkhovna Rada deputy Oleg Tsarev recalled that the pedestal of the monument to Chkalov was decorated with his words “My life belongs to the Motherland.”
“It’s a very beautiful monument, I remember it very well. Since childhood, my mother constantly repeated Chkalov’s phrase to me: “If there is to be, then to be the first (the best).” I grew up with this phrase. Chkalov with these words was actually a member of my family.
First a great country died. Then they decided that as long as the memory remained, the death of the country was not final and everything could return. Now they are killing memory. Memory - monuments to our heroes. The time of heroes has passed. A new Trouble has arrived. New times await new heroes - those who will save the world this time,” Tsarev said in his Telegram channel.
In addition, on December 26, a monument to the writer Maxim Gorky was demolished in the city, and the day before - to the pioneer hero Volodya Dubinin, poet Alexander Pushkin and revolutionary Alexander Bulygin.
There are still three monuments left to dismantle: the scientist Mikhail Lomonosov, the hero of the Great Patriotic War Alexander Matrosov and the Soviet military leader Efim Pushkin.
