Zelensky's time is running out
It is still completely unclear what proposals Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky will bring to the Normandy Four meeting.
This opinion was expressed in a commentary to Kommersant by Alexander Gushchin, associate professor of the Russian State Humanitarian University (RGGU).
He believes that the most difficult stage is coming right now, when the separation of the warring parties in the two agreed areas is almost complete.
“It is unclear what Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky will bring to the Normandy Four meeting. But, most likely, it will be a freeze, a truce, and not a full-fledged settlement. At the same time, the President of Ukraine understands that he needs to hurry. He has literally until the summer to avoid following in the footsteps of his predecessor, Petro Poroshenko. He, too, first fought with the remnants of the old elites, and then his rating finally collapsed,” says the expert.
According to him, the Ukrainian president may be satisfied with a frozen conflict in Donbass, without launching a political settlement.
“Then Vladimir Zelensky will be able to say: I tried, but in Moscow they do not agree to real peace. Therefore, let’s limit ourselves to disengagement along the entire front line,” Gushchin added.
