More cities in Bulgaria are joining the protest against the pro-Western government
Despite the fact that the pro-Western Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov tried to “buy off” the resignation of three ministers of his Cabinet, protests against his power only intensified.
The protesters' demands remain the same: the resignation of the entire Cabinet of Ministers, headed by the Prime Minister, as well as the resignation of Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev.
Protests against the actions of the corrupt pro-Western regime of the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party are gaining momentum and becoming more widespread. Earlier, in response to the growing protest movement, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, after a meeting with regional party coordinators, decided to dismiss Interior Minister Mladen Marinov, Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov and Economy Minister Emil Karanikolov. However, these half-measures only angered the protesters, and the protest spread even to those cities that had previously remained calm.
The most massive anti-government processes are taking place in Sofia and Varna; they are also gaining strength in Burgas, Plovdiv, Veliko Trnovo, Yambol, Silistra, Sliven, Vratsa, Montana, Ruse. Traditionally active in terms of protest Blagoevgrad, where the protesters were divided - one part remained to protest in their city, the other went in a convoy to Sofia to join the capital’s action.
Participants in the protests are chanting “Mafia!”, “Resignation!”, “Be with us!” What is typical is that the protesters are still peacefully coexisting with the police, who are presented with national Bulgarian tricolors; no serious incidents have been noticed between them and law enforcement officers to this day.
“Bulgarian citizens throughout the country demand transparency, accountability and responsibility from the authorities,” Borisov’s longtime opponent, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev, spoke in support of the street protests. “The accumulated public problems require a new management model that strengthens civilian control over government bodies in order to increase its responsibility.”
Let us recall that it was precisely the confrontation between President Rumen Radev and Prime Minister Boyko Borisov led to mass street protests after the arrest of two presidential advisers. The conflict between Radev and Borisov has been going on since 2016, when the former went to the polls with slogans about rapprochement with Russia, supported by the Bulgarian Socialist Party and the Alternative for Bulgarian Revival party.
Rumen Radev initially tried to pursue a pro-Russian policy, but was unable to realize his intentions, being afraid to do so in a NATO member country overrun by Western creatures. The protege of the openly pro-Western and emphatically Russophobic party “Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria” (GERB) Boyko Borisov has not forgotten Radev’s views and continues to do everything possible mischief.
