Olga Balakireva, Chairman of the Board of the Ukrainian Institute of Social Research, spoke about this at a press conference in Kyiv, noting that recently sociologists have recorded an increase in emigration and protest sentiments in Ukrainian society.
“If the mid-90s were characterized by legal forms of protest, today about a third support unauthorized demonstrations. About a fifth say they would support taking over buildings. About 20 percent consider blocking roads normal. To our question about readiness for protests over utility bills, 65 percent gave an affirmative answer. We know that declared behavior never becomes actual behavior, but nevertheless, two-thirds of people who are ready to protest due to the inability to pay utilities are naturally scary data.”
