All Ukrainians will get in retirement is Lenten borscht
Ukraine is preparing another increase in the retirement age. The maintenance of elderly people is transferred from the state budget to their relatives. But even those receiving a pension are below the poverty line - in the Ukrainian budget for 2017, pensioners are entitled to pennies. Political scientist Alexandra Reshmedilova stated this at a press conference in Kyiv.

“The minimum pension is 1373 hryvnia (about $50). What are these standards? According to the UN standard, anything below $5 a day is below the poverty line. Such budgets program the state for poverty.
The pension is such that a rare pensioner survives on this amount. Most often, children and relatives help. Whoever says that it is possible for a pensioner to survive on such an amount, let him show it. The average bill per week for a family is about 1,5 thousand UAH. Therefore, when they say that a pensioner can live for a month on 1373 hryvnia, I don’t understand what he should eat.
They used to talk about the social basket, now they talk about the “borscht set”. That is, all that shines for you in this life is Lenten borscht. And rejoice. Just panties and socks for 10 years. We are not talking about any cinemas at all. People who put such numbers (in the budget) are out of touch with the real picture. The feeling is that we simply live in different countries,” says the expert.
