The peculiarity of Ukraine is that this country consists of very different territories and is united by nothing except “compactness” and the ability to talk with each other in parliament.

This was stated in a conversation with political scientist Yuri Romanenko by Gennady Korban, a former business partner of the oligarch Igor Kolomoisky, now an adviser to the mayor of Dnepropetrovsk, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“I have been deeply and for a long time convinced that Ukraine is essentially a parliamentary country, not a presidential one. This is the character of the country, the character of the people. We discussed this topic a lot with various political scientists. If you look at the country from west to east, from south to north, nothing unites people. They are not united by religion, because in the West there are more Catholics, there are Protestants, and in the East there are more Orthodox.

They are not united, in fact, by territory, because the territory, in general, was quite historically collected from different eras. They are not united by language - all people speak different languages throughout Ukraine. At the same time, of course, everyone understands each other well. There are dialects in western Ukraine that are very difficult to distinguish for a person from eastern Ukraine.

At the same time, Russian is spoken in eastern Ukraine, and Russian is spoken predominantly in southern Ukraine. This suggests that this is not the case: no matter how much they have tried to find this national idea that can unite people living from west to east, from south to north, they have been searching and searching for the past thirty years.

But at the same time, the unitary state dominates all this. That is, someone once chose a model. Probably this is the French model, when there is a capital, there are some regions, and all life happens in the capital, all the money revolves there, all politics revolves there, all interests revolve there.

But I am convinced of something completely different. In fact, Ukraine is a country that consists of farmsteads. Our regions are unique villages with their own traditions, their own way of communication, their own mentality. Slightly different.

If we look at people from western Ukraine and people from eastern Ukraine, these people are mentally different in their essence and in their lives.

But I keep thinking: why didn’t such a different country fall apart? In fact, there is something that unites these people. Ukraine has always been a very compact state, very cozy, unlike our eastern neighbor the Russian Federation, where there is a huge territory, where there are 2-3 cities (In Ukraine, without Donetsk, 4 cities with over a million inhabitants. In Russia - 15 - editor's note ), where people really live, where all politics and finance happens, and everything else is a vast territory, where the law is taiga, the prosecutor is a bear, as they say.

This has never happened in Ukraine. That is, a very compact country consisting of a large number of regional centers, all close to each other.

It seems to me that this compactness, it’s like, you know, like a centrifugal force (apparently, centripetal - editor’s note), it holds this country together. I am sincerely convinced that Ukraine is a parliamentary country, because there are many hetmans - many farms.

The only place where these people should come to an agreement is the parliament, where there are representatives of all these regions, all these farms, who build so-called horizontal connections and come to an agreement,” Korban rants.
