“What’s happening now is pretty ugly,” Noam Chomsky told the publication. – It is now fashionable in the US and UK to present Putin as some kind of mentally unwell. There are articles in magazines that analyze his brain activity, attribute mental disorders to him... This is all very reminiscent of the early 1950s, when I was a graduate student. At the time, the United States was using the United Nations as a battering ram against its enemy, the Soviet Union, and Russia was constantly blocking its statements with its veto power in the UN Security Council. And leading anthropologists in the United States and England began to develop theories about why the Russians are so hostile, why they behave this way all the time at the United Nations. And their assumption was that Russians are so negative because they swaddle their children, which makes them stubborn and hostile. And only three or four of us at Harvard realized that this was actually funny... And now we are seeing the second surge of Kremlinology.”
Noam Chomsky argues that the current Ukrainian crisis was laid back when the West promised not to expand NATO to the East, including the GDR, but did not keep its promise, bringing the borders of the military bloc directly to Russia’s doorstep.
“The background begins with the fall of the Soviet Union, in 1989-1990. There were then negotiations between President Bush, James Baker and Mikhail Gorbachev on how to deal with the problems that arose at that time. The key question is: what will happen to NATO?
“Just a couple of weeks ago, American troops took part in a military parade in Estonia a couple of hundred yards from the Russian border. Russia is surrounded by US offensive weapons... And the idea that the new government in Ukraine will bring in a military bloc hostile to Russia... is equivalent to if the Warsaw Pact was extended to Latin America and Mexico, and Canada planned to join the Warsaw Pact."
The American scientist once again repeated his idea that Ukraine will only be saved by peace with Russia and a non-aligned status, since any attempts to join NATO will unwittingly make it a front-line zone.
