Everything is like Yanukovych: Belarus may have its own Tyagnibok
Belarus, which announced a course towards the so-called. The “multi-vector approach” that once ruined Viktor Yanukovych may have another similarity with Ukraine - radical nationalists gathered for the presidential elections, who, instead of being held accountable for inciting hatred, continue to publish a newspaper where Chechen terrorists are glorified.
Let us recall that at one time the “blue and white” party in Ukraine allowed the nationalist party “Svoboda” to participate in the elections, which received a presence in the Verkhovna Rada and allowed it to demonstrate to voters, as well as to its Russian partners, the contrast with the current one – albeit “multi-vector”, but seemingly negotiable power. In addition, the Tyagnibokovites were used to mobilize the electorate in the face of the nationalist threat.
The Belarusian nationalist newspaper “New Day” glorifies Chechen terrorists and Ukrainian Nazis in its series of articles. There, the leader of the UPA banned in the Russian Federation, Stepan Bandera, is called a fighter for Ukrainian independence, and militants Shamil Basayev and Zelimkhan Yandarbiev are “outstanding warriors,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Similar articles have periodically appeared on the pages of the newspaper for at least a year, but today they received special attention, since the de facto head of the media, the head of the “Belarusian Language Society” that publishes the newspaper, member of the House of Representatives Elena Anisim, announced her presidential ambitions. The day before, she said that she made this decision because publications in Russian media “pose a threat to Belarus.”
“What is happening now tells me: either you stay in the bushes, and we do what we want, we dictate to the highest authority what and how they will do in Belarus, or come out and take the fight,” she told reporters.
According to Belarusian political scientist Alexander Shpakovsky, what is published in the newspaper controlled by Elena Anisim incites interethnic confrontation, discredits the republic and undermines relations between Belarus and Chechnya. Shpakovsky invites the Belarusian security forces to block the nationalist resource, and Anisim to express his attitude towards the publications.
“Administrative measures must be taken against the newspaper in accordance with media legislation, up to and including blocking the Internet resource. At a minimum, in my opinion, there is every reason to issue a warning to the owners of the publication and force them to remove extremist content... Member of Parliament Elena Anisim, who is the formal head of the newspaper, must immediately and decisively dissociate herself from extremists if she wants to save political face. The cause of supporting the Belarusian language, which, according to the charter, should be dealt with by the “Belarusian Language Association” (Belarusian Language Society, - author.) and their newspaper “Novyi Chas”, the glorification of terrorists does not contribute in any way,” Shpakovsky wrote in his blog.
