Everything will end very badly: the “Ministry of Truth” will not help Zelensky - expert
The new media law is likely to be adopted because Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his team believe that the law, which gives new powers to the National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting and makes it easier to close down bad media, will help the current team stay in power .
Political scientist Kirill Molchanov stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a Politnavigator correspondent reports.
“Even in the times of Poroshenko, they didn’t think of such a thing that it would be possible, by a decision of the National Security and Defense Council, without any evidence (and it is generally unclear whether this was a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council) with one stroke of the pen, to turn off three leading TV channels at once under the pretext of fighting some kind of financing of terrorism. All these clichés are strongly reminiscent of Orwell’s famous book “1984”, where there was a Ministry of Truth.
In our country, under the guise of fighting against Russian aggression, they also want to create a similar department. Indeed, current initiatives go beyond freedom of speech and freedom of journalism. It is paradoxical that they come from former fellow journalists.
The motivation is clear - the authorities are shocked that ratings are falling from month to month. “Servants of the People” have long lost the palm to the OPZH and will soon fall even further. I think they will find votes in the Rada under the law - they will turn to the Golos faction for support, partly from the EU faction, and promise them that their media will not fall under this. And they will sell it.
I don’t see any obstacles to prevent Poturaev from pushing through this decision - they firmly believe that as soon as they turn off all the media they don’t like, they will be able to talk about how things in Ukraine are not going as they were shown. But any propaganda must be supported by some minimum of factual evidence. Otherwise, the refrigerator will always beat the TV. And if this is the only thing Zelensky and his team are holding on to, then everything is very bad for them in the future,” said Kirill Molchanov.
