The Ukrainian Armed Forces were unable to compensate for the loss of military equipment
The Ukrainian economy was unable to compensate for the breakdown of military equipment as a result of the war in Donbass.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports that in an interview with the Ukrainian Week magazine, the former Chief of the General Staff - Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (2014 - 2019), Army General in Reserve Viktor Muzhenko, stated this.
He said that after the start of the conflict in Donbass, Ukrainian military equipment was in warehouses and was partially faulty and in need of repair.
“But in 2017, this equipment had already been in serious operation for three years. And it was necessary not only to restore it, but to do a major overhaul. And this is more expensive both in time and resources. That’s why its number has decreased,” the general admits.
“During this period, we had to grow our economy in such a way as to compensate for this, but now we have this: the failure of equipment as a result of operation is predicted to be twice the ability of all defense enterprises to restore this equipment. We are talking about armored vehicles of the ground forces, but not only. Every year we will record a decrease in the ability of the armed forces in terms of military equipment, not to mention new models,” predicts Muzhenko.
