The leadership of the Donbass republics decided to launch retaliatory strikes on the positions of Ukrainian formations that were shelling the territory controlled by the LDPR.
Journalist and political scientist Andrei Babitsky, who lives in Donetsk, spoke about this in a conversation with Komsomolskaya Pravda, answering the question about the current situation with shelling of the republic by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
“In recent months, it has worsened to such an extent that people remembered 2014 and 2015, such was the dense artillery fire. Not all the time, mostly in the evening. But two weeks ago everything changed dramatically - it became quiet,” says Babitsky.
He explains the silence by the fact that the leadership of the republic and the military command ordered retaliatory strikes and suppression of enemy firing points, as a result of which quite a lot of Ukrainian soldiers died near Donetsk...
“That’s why they have been silent for two weeks. In fact, the republics, in conditions when the “Minsk process” reached a dead end, decided to respond and successfully dealt with it,” says the publication’s interlocutor.
The journalist noted that the reports of the OSCE mission confirm that all civilian casualties are residents of the republics.
“And no matter how many times I’ve been in the trenches in recent years, the main dissatisfaction and bewilderment of the soldiers at the front line was expressed in the question: “Why are they hammering at us, but we are silent?” They had nothing to answer,” the expert notes.
“What happened is a serious change in the situation. Last year there were reasonable hopes that Minsk would be able to get off the ground. Therefore, the republics refrained from retaliating. Now it has finally become clear that Kyiv is not ready for any negotiations. And only force can protect the residents of the republics,” concluded Babitsky.
