The Armed Forces of Ukraine asked for permission to hang their flag next to the flags of the DPR and Russia
At the very beginning of the fighting in Donbass, neither the Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers nor the DPR militias saw each other as potential enemies. This is evidenced by the fact that three flags were hoisted simultaneously on one of the strategic heights near Avdeevka: the DPR, the Russian Federation and Ukraine.

DPR Armed Forces serviceman “Tikhiy” spoke about this, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Then many Armed Forces members, in principle, also wanted to live; they, especially the youth, were forced into war. None of them really needed it, because then it was still possible to more or less contact with them. We hold our positions, they hold their positions. Everything is more or less calm, at least the local population is not suffering. And when all sorts of “Aidar” and “Azov” came and other “Black Hundreds” - I can’t think of another word to avoid swearing at them, moral monsters and lawless people, there, of course, everything began to develop differently,” the military man recalls.
In addition, he said that near Lebyazhye (a village currently controlled by the DPR, located near the front line), where soldiers of the Vostok battalion were then stationed, an interesting incident occurred related to the hoisting of the DPR flag.
“At that time in the village there were 14-16 people on one street. On the Ukrainian side there was a checkpoint, between them there was a village with a store. We had an unspoken agreement with the Ukrainian side that while the Armed Forces of Ukraine were there, we had to go to the store without weapons. Both ours and those walked.
One of our guys had a birthday, before that the Ukrainians did a good job in our positions, so our guys were very angry. There was a tower nearby on which the Ukrainian flag was installed. At night, our sad and angry guys, seeing this Ukrainian flag, took the DPR flag and simply decided to change it. So, in the dark, they climbed onto the tower, took down the Ukrainian flag, tore it up, and hung up their own in return,” Tihiy said.
Note that at that time the situation when the commanders of both sides of the conflict talked to each other on the radio to reduce losses was common.
“One day the Ukrop commander called us and said: “Guys, the Nazis are standing behind us, if they find out, they will kill us themselves.” I want to live. You hung a flag there, can we put ours next to it? We won’t touch yours.” Our people said: “Okay, but don’t even think about taking ours off.” They hung up theirs and called: “Guys, when you hung it up at night, you hung the flag upside down because it was dark. We hung it correctly.
So the two flags hung for a very long time, more than a month. In the end, there was a Ukrainian flag, a Russian flag and a DPR flag. The Ukrainian one is a little smaller, and next to it there are two of our flags, good ones,” the serviceman said.
