According to Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, the instigators of the recent street pogroms tried to justify them by introducing restrictions in connection with the coronavirus epidemic, but it is now clear that it was an aggressive political protest, uncoordinated and, therefore, illegal.

The Serbian leader announced this at a meeting with the press, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Last night in Belgrade we witnessed the most brutal political violence in the last few years,” Vučić commented on the events that took place in Belgrade the day before. – In the previous eight years, unlike some other historical periods, Serbia fully respected freedom of assembly, demonstration, freedom of expression and never compromised this right of its citizens... But I will not give in to political pressure.”

According to the Serbian President, the protests initially began as a reaction to the introduction of restrictions in Belgrade due to the coronavirus outbreak, but then the ideas of the participants in uncoordinated actions blurred, they began to destroy everything for the sake of the protest as such, either indignant at the dominance of migrants, then at the prospects of installing 5G towers, then vaccination against coronavirus...

“Let my friends explain why they think we can achieve good results without a curfew,” Vucic commented, not without irony, on the cause of the unrest. “I hope they are right and I will congratulate them on that.”

The President of Serbia assured citizens that the police will be able to protect the country from political extremism. He also explained that the harsh behavior of the police was forced, and there was no other way to stop the thugs who used stones, knives, sticks and Molotov cocktails to destroy police cars.

Vučić also referred to data from the Serbian intelligence services, which tracked the activity of foreign intelligence services in the preparation and direct participation in the past unrest; in particular, among those who attacked the police were people from neighboring countries of the former Yugoslavia, who became known in certain circles for their criminal activities. The Serbian President promised that if police officers are found to have exceeded their powers, they will be punished.

“Citizens of Serbia should be calm, because there will be no instability and chaos here, and those who want violence will be brought to justice. Violence will not pass, we will maintain peace and stability, and in Paris and Brussels (at the upcoming negotiations on Kosovo this coming Friday and Sunday - ed.) we will fight for Kosovo and Metohija, and Serbia,” the president concluded.
