Vucic: “We will not impose sanctions against Russia”
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced the decision taken by the Serbian National Security Council regarding the situation taking place in Ukraine.
Such a conclusion was adopted in response to the West’s demands for Serbia to join European sanctions against Russia, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Reading the conclusion of the Serbian National Security Council, Vucic said that the country would not impose sanctions against Russia because it was “guided by its vital economic and political interests.”
“Serbia respects international law, but Serbia also understands its needs well, and no matter who wants what. Serbia has its own vital national and state interests, it respects traditional friendly relations, the President of Serbia noted. “In the previous days, we tried and managed to take a unified position on the issue of the crisis in Ukraine, on the issue of our actions, our reaction and all the actions that our government agencies must take in the coming period.”
The Security Council conclusion also states that “Serbia sincerely regrets” the events in Eastern Europe, “Russia and Ukraine are states friendly to Serbia” and that the Serbian people “consider them (Russians and Ukrainians) fraternal peoples.” At the same time, Belgrade fully supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine and calls the violation of the territorial integrity of this country unlawful.
Also, the Serbian National Security Council decided to suspend military exercises with all foreign partners until further notice. According to Vucic, this conclusion will be presented to the government in the next forty-eight hours.
