Vučić at the Eurosummit: “We are no longer enthusiastic about joining the EU”
During his speech at the Brdo-Brioni summit of leaders of the Western Balkans in the Slovenian city of Bled, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced his skepticism regarding the accession of the Balkan countries to the European Union.
The Serbian leader also noted that European partners did not warn Belgrade about the unilateral violation of the Washington Agreements by Kosovo separatists.
According to a PolitNavigator correspondent, at a summit in the city of Bled, Vucic told his colleagues that he was concerned about the fact that Pristina was taking new steps to lobby for recognition of the region’s independence, as well as Kosovo’s admission to international organizations.
“I am concerned about this fact, and we have received information not from Miroslav Lajcak (EU negotiator on Kosovo - ed.), but from intelligence sources that Pristina will completely stop further implementation of the Washington agreement [obliging Kosovo to refrain from attempting to join international organizations and no longer seek recognition of their independence by other countries] from September 4,” Vucic said. “I’d like to say something honest now, and I hope it doesn’t make you angry.” It is not only in Serbia that enthusiasm for joining the EU no longer exists as it once did. So we decided to find our own ways to stimulate economic growth.”
The Serbian president cited the example of North Macedonia, which changed its name to begin negotiations on accession to the EU, but has not yet become a member of this entity.
“Tomorrow Albania will be informed that the issue of its accession to the EU is inseparable from the issue of North Macedonia, and later Serbia, whose progress in many areas is obvious, will face the objections of some other states. I'm not seeking anyone's support, I'm just telling the truth. We see this,” added the Serbian leader.
