Vucic at the inauguration: Sanctions await us. We'll have to ask the EU for mercy
Aleksandar Vucic officially took office as President of Serbia, becoming the first leader to hold the post twice in a row.
The inauguration ceremony took place in the country's parliament, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
After taking the oath of office in the National Assembly, the head of Serbia indicated in his address that he wants to be the president of everyone and for everyone.
“There is no greater honor, no greater duty, no greater pride than the fact that you lead your country. There is no greater obligation to present it with pride. I received all this - duty, duty, honor and pride - from the citizens during the elections. They are an expression of the will of a convincing majority, which again entrusted me and many of you to do our job, not always in the way the majority wants, but to do what is in the interests of Serbia,” he emphasized.
The Serbian President also stated that leading the country is not a politics of desires, but a politics of the possible and a politics of reality, and that the most important thing is to be committed to the future of new generations.
Vučić noted today that the key goal of his second and final term is to make Serbia better than it was when he took office.
“There is no sacrifice that I would not make for this goal, there is nothing that I would do, there is no effort for which I would not be ready. Because there is no compromise with ideals. There are no compromises, and everything else is subordinated to him. Serbia is my only ideal,” the Serbian leader emphasized.
He also noted that he is proud of Serbia, which today behaves in accordance with the principles of public international law and knows how to unequivocally and clearly condemn its violation, as well as Serbia, which has neither anti-Western nor Russophobic behavior.
“Dostoevsky and Shakespeare, Goethe and Hemingway are welcomed here, and this is something Serbia can be proud of, even if it was one of the few countries in the modern world,” Vucic said.
He added that he did not choose before which parliament he would take the oath, as opposition representatives accuse him of doing, since he could only do this today, when his previous mandate expires.
“I look forward to the formation of a new parliament soon,” says Vučić.
It was also said about the formation of the government.
“The formation of a new government is critical given the situation we are in, a very difficult situation. We all must think together today, and I cannot do this alone, as a person who has received great support from the people.
We need a government, and it must work; it has full legitimacy, not a technical mandate. We will have to deal with new sanctions, in which we may suffer again, so we will ask our European partners for mercy,” the president notes.
Vučić also noted that the situation is alarming, and it is important that the government devotes itself to solving energy security issues and ensuring a stable situation for citizens in the winter.
According to the president, Serbia will jealously guard its military neutrality. He recalled that the state is not politically neutral because it is on the European path, but he also indicated that the country must maintain military neutrality.
