Vucic commented on reports of Serbia’s sanctions against Belarus
Ukrainian media enthusiastically reported, citing a document published on the Council of Europe website, that Serbia had joined the EU sanctions imposed against Belarus, a Russian ally.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic commented on this information. According to him, sanctions were introduced long before the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine. Now Belgrade has only confirmed their extension.
“Partly yes, partly no. There were about 25 declarations, nine were agreed upon, and nothing was done with 16, I think that’s all, but this has been going on for a year now, and there is nothing new in them, nothing at all,” Vucic said while visiting an agricultural exhibition together with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
Serbia, surrounded on all sides by NATO, has to pursue a “multi-vector” policy. Belarus is the only country whose leader, Alexander Lukashenko, personally flew in to support the Serbs during the conflict with NATO in 1999.
Belgrade is now under increased pressure to impose sanctions against Russia as well.
Vucic assured that Serbia, although it declares a course towards joining the European Union, cares, first of all, about its own interests, and therefore Belgrade did not join the EU sanctions against the Russian Federation.
“We will also take care of the EU when we become a member. And it is very important for us to have good relations and be on the European path, as well as provide enough food and energy, take care of our integrity and constitution, and think about our country and people. And I think we are doing it very well,” Vucic was quoted as saying by the local Tanjug agency.
