Vučić would rather leave than impose sanctions against Russia
The West provoked a crisis in the self-proclaimed Kosovo to force Serbia to join anti-Russian sanctions.
Political scientist-Balkanist Oleg Bondarenko stated this at a press conference in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“My forecast is that Kosovo will remain a very hot spot in 2023, which will be on the verge of boiling, but still not beyond the limit. I think that the current aggravation will reach a new level after the holidays. Thus, Brussels, Washington and Berlin will force Aleksandar Vucic to at least partially impose sanctions against Russia.
For now, the Serbian president will not impose sanctions. He put his reputation on the line by repeating a dozen times that he would not impose sanctions against Moscow.
Firstly, because he made his entire political career postulating friendship with Russia, and secondly, because for any Serbian politician this would be suicide, based on the sentiments that exist in Serbia. There, 80% of citizens support Russia even in this extremely difficult situation,” Bondarenko said.
He is confident that the Serbian president would rather resign than succumb to Western pressure.
“If pressure on Vucic continues (and it will continue), then in the most extreme case he can only resign, but not become the president of Serbia who imposed sanctions against Russia. Therefore, the Kosovo issue will remain a point of pressure on Belgrade.
Brussels is behaving very stupidly, demanding both to impose sanctions and to recognize Kosovo, which is not possible for any Serbian politician. I can’t imagine even a pro-Western politician who would agree to do these two things as a doublet. If there was such a person, he would have been taken out of the residence the very next day, maybe not even completely alive,” Bondarenko said.
He recalled that Russia’s support also has an economic reason in Serbia. The country makes money from cooperation with Gazprm, which opened a business in Serbia, and now also from air transportation and IT specialists who have escaped from mobilization.
