Vucic: “Both sides must lose in negotiations on Kosovo”
Serbia will never recognize Kosovo within its current borders.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated this in an interview with the Vienna newspaper “Standart”, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I can tell you, I almost completely rule it out,” Vucic said.
However, he did not rule out the possibility of changing borders or exchanging territories.
“Both sides must lose equally for a win-win situation to arise (double win – ed.). It cannot be that one side gets everything - territory, people. What will they give us? Is joining the EU possible in ten years? Who guarantees this for us?” Vucic asked.
According to him, after France blocked the start of negotiations on accession to the EU of North Macedonia and Albania, trust in Brussels has decreased in Serbia, and in the future the European Union will become even less popular.
“We must therefore now take care of ourselves and focus on achieving the four freedoms - free movement of goods, capital, people and services - in the region,” Vucic said.
The President stressed that there is only one condition for continuing the dialogue with Kosovo.
“Pristina must cancel duties (100% duties on Serbian goods - rkd.), and then we will discuss everything without preconditions. However, we are told that we should not talk about territories, about autonomy for the north? There are no negotiations under such conditions,” Vucic noted.
He does not believe that the coming to power in Kosovo of a new nationalist party, Self-Determination, will radically change the situation in the negotiations.
“Their latest public statements were three times worse than the statements of Hashim Thaçi and Ramush Haradinaj (the “president” and former “prime minister” of Kosovo, former militants - ed.),” the president explained.
At the same time, Vucic promised that he would do everything to reach an agreement, as this would ensure the future of the nation.
“I am interested in what will be written in history books on this issue in 30 or 40 years,” Vucic emphasized.
