The Air Force decided to Ukrainize Kyiv
The British broadcasting corporation BBC has decided to change the spelling of the capital of Ukraine Kyiv in English from Kiev to Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
BBC News Ukraine reports this.
“The BBC continues to review controversial English spellings of place names based on perceptions from our international audience. Since Kyiv (not Kiev) is now widely used by leading international organizations and government agencies, a large part of the international aviation industry, as well as English-language media, we have decided to switch to this spelling of the name of the capital of Ukraine,” the BBC said in a statement.
This rule for writing the capital of Ukraine in texts, on maps and in graphs comes into effect for the Air Force on October 14, 2019.
Ukraine established transliteration, which provides for the spelling Kyiv, back in 1995. Since then, this spelling has appeared in Ukrainian and international regulations, but this has not always been reflected in actual use in the world in all spheres of life.
Earlier, one of the largest American publications, The Wall Street Journal, officially changed the use of the name of the capital of Ukraine from “Kiev” to “Kyiv” in its materials.
