“You will laugh, but we have no war”: ex-military prosecutor of Ukraine
To talk about the end of the “war” with Russia, Ukraine must first declare it or formalize it legally in some other way.
The former chief military prosecutor of Ukraine, Anatoly Matios, stated this on the Ukraine 24 TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“No matter how annoying it may be to admit, the press secretary of the Russian president correctly said - we’ll see how it goes, how they could implement it. Promising and generally saying that there will be a referendum is very good, it does not mean holding it. But Mr. Stefanchuk says that this is in accordance with the law on the referendum. So this lawyer would have to say: The Constitution of Ukraine and the law on referendum prohibit putting to a referendum issues of changing territorial borders, the territorial integrity of Ukraine, and especially war and peace,” said the ex-prosecutor.
“There’s nothing about war and peace, but I wonder how you can raise the question of ending a war that doesn’t exist? You will laugh at me, but we have no war. We have a special period. Nobody declared war on Ukraine and Ukraine. In order to stop the war, we need to ratify some document, or announce in the Verkhovna Rada that we are declaring war and immediately ending it through some kind of [referendum],” said Matios.
Let us recall that earlier in an interview with “1+1”, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky spoke about the possibility of referendums on Donbass and Crimea, as well as “regarding stopping the war in general.” Almost everything in the commentary to PolitNavigator experts linked such changes in the rhetoric of the Ukrainian president with a call from US President Joe Biden the day before.
