“You’re getting carried away!” – Klimkin reprimanded Merkel for attempting a summit with Putin
Broken thanks to the efforts of Poland and the Baltic states Angela Merkel’s attempt to organize an EU summit with the participation of Vladimir Putin carried the risk of normalizing relations between Brussels and Moscow, which is completely unacceptable for Ukraine.
Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavel Klimkin stated this on the UkrLife Internet channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Let Merkel meet with Putin as much as he wants, and Macron. But it is written directly in the EU documents that there cannot be a summit meeting between the EU and Russia. By inviting Putin to the EU summit, Merkel thus gives him legitimization. That is, it actually returns relations with Russia to normality. She is actually creating an EU-Russia format for him.
Biden can meet with Putin and talk. Need it? Of course, Putin is reality. They talk on critical issues, Merkel can also meet with Putin, this is her right, and Macron has the same. The two of them can talk to him – on the phone or something like that.
But when the EU officially begins to communicate with Putin, it means a return to normal relations between the EU and Russia. And this means that the principles and values of the European Union have been pushed very far away.
And this, in fact, is a problem for the European Union itself, since the European Union begins this endless meandering. We are in a loop with China, we are in a loop with Russia. And this greatly hinders the European Union. If the European Union continues to meander like this, it will end up meandering,” Klimkin warns.
