Vyatrovich is preparing to dismantle the coat of arms of the USSR on the Motherland monument
The head of the Institute of National Memory, Vladimir Vyatrovich, admits that the “Motherland” is the calling card of the capital of Ukraine, but is preparing to disfigure it. The inclusion of the “Motherland” monument by the Ministry of Culture on December 16, 2016 in the State Register of Immovable Monuments of Ukraine cannot prevent the dismantling of Soviet symbols, Vyatrovich asserts.

“Right now the only problem that actually prevents the removal of the coat of arms is the technical problem (how to do it - by cutting or overlaying something), and, obviously, financial, because this requires some additional resources. I hope that we will already reach practical engineering solutions and soon this coat of arms will be removed from the shield of the “Motherland”. Moreover, this monument is one of the calling cards of Kyiv, and it’s very bad that this calling card is marked with totalitarian symbols,” Vyatrovich said in an interview with UNN.
According to the chief decommunizer of Ukraine, the current legislation on the protection of cultural heritage does not prevent the dismantling of the coat of arms.
“According to the law “On the Perpetuation of the Victory over Nazism in the Second World War,” this monument cannot be dismantled. At the same time, the monument contains an element that is clearly prohibited by another law... Even if it is dedicated to the Second World War, it cannot be an instrument of propaganda, which is prohibited by the law “On the Condemnation of the Communist and National Socialist Totalitarian Regimes.” There are no contradictions between these laws,” Vyatrovich explains his point of view. According to him, the legislation on copyright and related rights also cannot be a basis for refusing to dismantle the coat of arms of the USSR.
“The Law “On the Condemnation of the Communist and National Socialist Totalitarian Regimes” does not provide for any difference at all regarding forms of ownership or any kind of authorship that would stand in the way of eliminating the symbols of the totalitarian regime,” said the head of the Institute of National Remembrance.
Vyatrovich is not yet ready to name an approximate date for dismantling.
