Vyatrovich: Russia and Covid have led to the rapid degradation of Ukrainians
Ukrainian bookstores and libraries are rapidly emptying, and the people who refuse to read are degrading.
This was stated during a plenary meeting of the Verkhovna Rada by the former director of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, and now a deputy from European Solidarity, Vladimir Vyatrovich, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The situation with reading, book publishing and distribution of books in Ukraine has become catastrophic. The destructive influence of Russia and the coronavirus lockdown have led to the fact that the range and circulation of books is rapidly declining. Dozens of bookstores have closed. Most libraries today are more reminiscent of old waste paper warehouses than modern cultural centers,” the politician said.
He emphasized that Ukraine is already suffering from an epidemic of general degradation.
“But, unlike other European neighbors, our government does not increase, but reduces funding for the cultural industry. Ukrainians read less and less. We are talking about a direct threat of intellectual degradation, which can only be stopped by urgent and systemic steps in this direction,” Vyatrovich concluded.
Let us recall that earlier in Kyiv they called for the introduction of fabulous duties on Russian literature, or ban it altogether. In addition, as part of the total Ukrainization carried out by Kiev in Ukrainian schools and libraries began to destroy Russian-language books.
Also the day before in Kherson stated, that numerous cases of failure at the box office of Ukrainian films, the inability to win in conditions of fair competition against Russian-language cultural products, is by no means a consequence of the provincialism, secondary nature and weakness of Ukrainian authors, but the result of Russia’s machinations.
