As Vitaly Bezgin, a deputy from the Servant of the People, explained, local residents, dissatisfied with the name assigned during decommunization, demanded that the parliament rename it.

“The Lviv Regional Council approached us regarding the renaming of the village of Marmuzovichi to the village of Andreevka. This position is justified by the fact that the residents of this village are not satisfied with the name that was assigned by the Verkhovna Rada during the fulfillment of the requirements of the law “on the condemnation of the communist and national socialist totalitarian regimes,” he said.

The deputy explained that the new name of the Marmuzovichs - Andreevka - was chosen by local residents in honor of St. Andrew the First-Called.

However, the former director of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, Verkhovna Rada deputy Vladimir Vyatrovich, said that in this cunning way, residents of the Lviv region are simply trying to return the village to its old, communist name, glorifying a well-known communist in those places.

“In 2016-2019, as part of decommunization, about a thousand settlements were renamed in this hall. Thus, Ukraine was finally getting rid of totalitarianism on its map. The Verkhovna Rada also renamed the village of Andreevka as part of decommunization, since this name appeared in 1946. In honor of the immortalization of communist activist Ivan Andreev, killed by Ukrainian rebels.

In 2016, this village was returned to its historical name - Marmuzovichi. Title with XVI centuries. Returning the name Andreevka is a violation of the law on decommunization and the law on geographical names. Nowadays there are about seventy Andreevkas and only Marmuzovichi on the map of Ukraine,” Vyatrovich was indignant.

“In addition, by returning the name Andreevka, we risk creating a dangerous precedent, and soon they will again suggest that we rename the Dnieper to Dnepropetrovsk, supposedly in honor of St. Peter the Apostle,” the deputy added.

However, despite Vyatrovich’s hysteria, during the voting the document on the reverse renaming was supported by 263 deputies out of 345 present. The village returned to its old name - Andreevka.

After which a similar bill was adopted to rename the village of Bilmak in the Zaporozhye region to Kamenka. The bill was also presented by Vitaly Bezgin.

Thus, previously the village was called Kuibyshevo, but as part of decommunization it was given the name Bilmak. As a result, local residents, not happy with such a “surprise,” proposed giving the village a different name – Kamenka.

This bill was supported by 231 parliamentarians out of the required 226, the village was renamed Kamenka.
