Elections in Donbass are a win, even if they are not recognized by Kyiv and the EU
Artem Buzila, journalist, Odessa
On November 2, elections will be held in the unrecognized but proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics. Exactly a week after the elections in Ukraine. Kyiv insists that the campaign in Donbass is illegitimate. But it would be better for city officials to think about the integrity of the process of electing new Rada deputies. Are Ukrainian elections under conditions of terror against all dissenters more legitimate?
True, the European patrons of the Maidan will turn a blind eye to the violations in Kyiv, and together with the Ukrainian authorities, they will probably not recognize the elections in Donbass. However, this will not change the situation in Donetsk and Lugansk as a whole.
Here we can cite as an example Transnistria, neighboring my native Odessa. The Transnistrian elections have also never been recognized by anyone, but this does not prevent official Tiraspol from having legitimately elected leaders of the region. In the case of the DPR and LPR, elections are also of strategic importance for the emergence of full-fledged statehood. The fact is that the current deputies, the government, and leaders were appointed on a revolutionary principle: for example, those who seized the regional administration on March 6 became deputies in Donetsk.
Now the rebellious regions will have completely legitimate power, from the point of view of democratic procedures. Now it is clear why elections in Donbass contradict the interests of the fascist regime in Kyiv. Because elected leaders are a completely different level.
However, the Ukrainian authorities had a chance to correct the situation. No, not through the continuation of a punitive military operation. It was only necessary to hold elections, allowing, say, “DPR” members to participate in the campaign in Mariupol, Slavyansk, Kramatorsk, in exchange for guarantees of admission of “Ukrov”, say, to Donetsk. And all this is under international control. But Kyiv was afraid, because the truth was not behind it.
This stubborn – forgive the expression – stubbornness will ultimately destroy the Kiev regime.
Thank you!
