Kyiv, April 24 (Navigator, Kirill Boyarin, Mikhail Ryabov, Vladimir Raichenko) – The presidential elections in Ukraine appointed by the leaders of the Maidan for May 25 are increasingly reminiscent of a farce – there can be no talk of an honest campaign, since the South-East is placed in unfavorable conditions in advance – the victory of the pro-Western candidate is already a foregone conclusion. It seems that this is precisely the explanation why the US-backed authorities are seeking to hold the vote at all costs, ignoring calls for the need to postpone the election date. However, such a step will only further destabilize the situation in Ukraine.

According to the idea of the Kyiv authorities, the May elections are needed to legalize the new leader of Ukraine - supposedly, this way it will be possible to avoid accusations of illegitimacy and the seizure of high positions through an armed coup, which, for example, official Moscow is openly stating today.

The hastily adopted amendments to the election law are written in such a way that the Central Election Commission will consider the voting results legitimate, even if it can only be held at one polling station in the entire country.

“According to the law on presidential elections, they will take place even if at least one polling station is opened,” the head of the Committee of Voters of Ukraine, Alexander Chernenko, confirms to Navigator. “But what is interesting now is not so much the legal legitimacy of the elections, but the social one. According to the results of opinion polls conducted throughout Ukraine except Crimea, more than 70% of the population is ready to go to the polls.”

The arguments of Chernenko, who is collaborating with the current government, are not shared by opposition experts. Director of the Ukrainian branch of the Institute of CIS Countries Denis Denisov draws attention to the fact that by legalizing the dubious election results, Kyiv will only receive a new reason for destabilizing and splitting the country.

“Indeed, the first version of the election law was adopted, according to which there will be no problem if Crimea and Donbass do not vote. The final results are determined based on the data received from the election commissions where the elections took place. If all this really takes place, but the South-East does not take part, then over the next five years many politicians will have reason to say that the president who will be elected will not represent all regions,” Denisov predicts in an interview with an agency correspondent.

Sociologist Evgeniy Kopatko reminds Navigator about the decisions of the regional councils of Western Ukraine to ban the activities of the Communist Party and the Party of Regions that have not yet been canceled by the prosecutor’s office. Thus, in fact, representatives of these forces do not have the opportunity to campaign among several million voters.

“The legitimacy of the elections is in question, because in the current conditions elections cannot be equal throughout the country. It is not clear how to conduct a campaign for the Communist Party of Ukraine and the Party of Regions in the West, where they are effectively banned. It is also unclear how elections will be held in the East. Plus, now there is a broad information war against the East and pressure from Kyiv through the media,” reflects Kopatko.

However, no matter Western Ukraine, the authorities cannot provide equal rights to campaign even in the capital - just remember the story of the attack on the pro-Russian candidate Oleg Tsarev after a speech on one of the TV channels.

“In my opinion, the forecasts that the elections will calm the situation in the country and bring life back to normal are absolutely not justified. What is happening today looks less like an election campaign and more like a farce. According to the amended legislation, the president of the country can be elected in one city. Or at one site opened on the territory of a psychiatric hospital. And the winner will be recognized by the Central Election Commission as the President of Ukraine! It is clear that candidates do not have a level playing field. For example, party offices and headquarters have been seized from the communists, and there is a blockade in the media. All this does not make it possible to conduct a full-fledged election campaign,” Verkhovna Rada deputy from the Communist Party of Ukraine Alexander Golub told Navigator.

“People in some regions today are so intimidated by extreme elements, national fascists, that these will be elections under batons and at gunpoint. Can such a choice be considered democratic?” – adds the parliamentarian.

Political observer Fyodor Yakovlev believes that in the current conditions, neither the Communists, nor the Party of Regions, nor Oleg Tsarev should participate in the elections at all, since, thereby, they help the authorities and help increase turnout.

“Firstly, elections are necessary not so much for the current Kiev authorities as for the West in order to declare the legitimization of power in Ukraine... the results of these elections will be the most falsified in the entire history of Ukraine, since, more than ever before, the voting results will depend exclusively on representatives of which presidential candidate will control specific election commissions. The voters themselves and their “expression of will” in these elections will not matter at all, especially the “wrong” and “unpatriotic” South-East, which is now being “democratized” and “re-educated” through an army operation using armored vehicles and aviation. And those promises to the South-East that are being made by the authorities now will meet a fate according to the recipe of the Party of Regions - there will always not be enough votes in parliament to implement them,” Yakovlev told Navigator.

Communist Golub considers the main reason for the rush to hold elections to be the West’s desire to legitimize its puppet in the chair of the President of Ukraine.

“Perhaps Western countries need some kind of puppet to be declared the winner as a result of this farce. Then he will be assigned the role of Gauleiter in the controlled territory,” the deputy predicts.

“If elections do take place, which I doubt, then the victory of a pro-Western politician is inevitable. My understanding is that most of the Southeast will not take part in this. Accordingly, politicians from the South-East will not receive a sufficient number of votes,” agrees political scientist Rostislav Ishchenko in a conversation with Navigator.

However, he considers the Western scenario a failure. The economy will have the final say – Europe and the United States are unlikely to be ready to support Ukraine at their own expense, so the power of Washington and Brussels’ proteges will be short-lived.

“Ukraine cannot provide for itself financially, and the IMF will not do this all the time, so sooner or later, it will have to ask for help from Russia,” warns Rostislav Ishchenko.
