Elections in Ukraine show growing tendency towards rebellion
The low turnout in the second round of mayoral elections in several Ukrainian cities on Sunday indicates that people are no longer interested in participating in government affairs because they do not believe that it will change anything. A riot is to be expected in the foreseeable future.
The founder of the Union of Left Forces party, Vasily Volga, told a PolitNavigator correspondent about this comment.
“The elections showed that people have very little interest in participating in this kind of event, the turnout was very low. The regions continue to be controlled by the same local elites as before. People don't believe that elections can change anything.
In general, the same thing is happening in other countries - the management model is collapsing. People who want change are simply refusing legitimate democratic procedures. This is expressed both in low turnout and, for example, in protest movements in connection with quarantine restrictions.
Ukraine is infected with the “European integration virus”; they are trying to transfer stamps and models of the so-called here. free democratic world, and suffers from the same diseases as him. The models are unable to do anything.
The loss of interest of citizens in the state will sooner or later result in powerful social upheavals. The first task of the state is to legitimize power, legitimize the right to violence. But legitimacy is not a legal concept, it is social recognition. The more legitimate the state is, the more citizens are voluntarily involved in its procedures. And the elites who are in power feel even more confident.
And people refuse this desire of the elites to always be in power. People demonstrate a very low level of involvement in government affairs. Low turnout indicates that people no longer believe the existing model, that the legitimacy of the government will continue to decline, and in parallel with this, the tendency to revolt and the likelihood of social upheaval will increase. It seems to me that they are inevitable in the near future,” Volga said.
