Elections in Albania: fighting, shooting and killing
On the eve of Sunday's parliamentary elections in Albania, a clash broke out in the city of Elbasan between supporters of the ruling Socialist Party and the main opposition Democratic Party.
As a result of the clash, one person was killed and four were injured.
As a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, the clash occurred in front of the office of the country's main opposition party, the Democratic Party, in the city of Elbasan. During the fight, former policeman Arber Papleka, a supporter of the ruling Socialist Party, opened fire with a machine gun, killing democratic activist Pierin Kuvani and wounding four other people, including the son-in-law of the deceased and a policeman.
The police who arrived at the scene have already detained ten people who took part in the fight; one of the organizers of the socialist attack on the headquarters of the Democrats, Clement Xhaferi, a man with a criminal reputation, has been put on the wanted list.
Albania is set to hold parliamentary elections next Sunday, with experts predicting a bitter fight will take place between incumbent Prime Minister Edi Ram's Western-backed Socialist Party and the largest opposition Democratic Party, which is trying to win similar support. Edi Rama himself, who has been at the head of the country (president in Albania - a more representative position) since 2013, does not want to leave power and hopes to be elected for another term.
