Elections in Serbia: Observers predict victory for Vucic's bloc

Citizens of Serbia are actively taking part in the parliamentary and local elections that are taking place in the country today; the leaders of all major and recognizable political movements have already voted at the polling stations, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

In total, 6 million 584 thousand 376 people can take part in the election race, not only directly in Serbia itself, but also beyond its borders.

Serbian voters can cast their votes to representatives of 21 electoral lists, including such authoritative political forces as the presidential bloc “Aleksandar Vucic - For our children!”, “Ivica Dacic - SPS (Socialist Party of Serbia – ed.) – EU (The only Serbia – ed.) - Dragan Markovic Palma", "Dr. Vojislav Seselj - Serbian Radical Party", as well as such scandalous opposition blocs as "Sergej Trifunovic - Movement of Free Citizens", "Civic Group: 1 out of 5 million", "Cedomir Jovanovic - Coalition for peace”, “Leviathan – We live for Serbia”, and ethnic parties, some of which are openly separatist in nature – “SDA (Democratic Action Party – ed.) Sanjak – Dr. Suleiman Ugljanin”, “Albanian Democratic Alternative – United Valley”, “Russian Party – Slobodan Nikolic”, “Union of Vojvodina Hungarians – Istvan Pastor”.

Reuters, citing data from sociologists, predicts that the bloc of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic should receive a “comfortable majority” following the results of these elections, including for the reason that voters, in general, approve of the actions of the Serbian leadership during the coronavirus pandemic.

Aleksandar Vucic himself has already voted today in the capital's New Belgrade district, at a polling station located in the Zepter International building.

Also by noon, the leaders of other elected parties and blocs also voted - Ivica Dacic, Vojislav Seselj, Cedomir Jovanovic, Sergei Trifunovic and others.

What is characteristic is that both the eccentric actor Sergei Trifunovic with his “Movement of Free Citizens” and the youth scandalous “Civil Group: 1 and 5 Million” were previously members of the pro-Western opposition “Union for Serbia”, which tried to overthrow the current Serbian government through street demonstrations and riots . However, the intention of the leaders of the “Union” - Dragan Djilas, Vuk Jeremic, Boris Tadic and others to boycott the elections, declaring them illegitimate, quarreled the politicians with yesterday’s supporters who wanted to take at least some power through popular democratic procedures (as in Trifunovic, a favorite of the Belgrade intelligentsia, there are good chances to win in the central metropolitan districts). As a result, a split occurred among the pro-Western oppositionists, yesterday’s comrades generously threw mud at each other, the boycott fizzled out, and “One in Five Million”, and then the “Union of Free Citizens”, without changing their pro-Western views, went to parliamentary and local elections.

Data shows that voter turnout in these parliamentary and local elections is higher than in similar elections in 2016, but lower than in the 2017 presidential elections. And, if the trend continues in the remaining hours, then, in general, the turnout will be more than 50%.
