“Red poppy is completely different. In Russian and Ukrainian culture, poppy is rather neutral, but in European culture this is no longer the case. Opium is made from poppies, and poppy dew makes you sleepy. In ancient culture, Sleep, the brother of Death, was depicted in a wreath of poppies. Poppy causes heavy sleep without dreams, it is a symbol of oblivion, poisoning, loss of consciousness, darkness, which, insensibly for a person, turns into death. As a symbol, the Ukrainian poppy is a request to forget. This is a desperate plea for Europe to forget and not remember that in that war Ukraine dared to fight the Europeans. According to the Luhansk culturologist, by choosing such a symbol, the current Ukrainian authorities are declaring that they are making a move to abandon the country’s past.
“Both in official rhetoric and at the symbolic level, post-Maidan Ukraine is abandoning its former self. Will the world community hear the desperate plea for mercy? History says that this has never happened before, but we will be able to see it with our own eyes,” states Nina Ishchenko.
