Islamic militant extradited by Ukraine to Russia sentenced to 18 years in prison
On June 26, the North Caucasus District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don sentenced Timur Tumgoev, a native of Vladikavkaz, to 18 years in prison on charges of participating in hostilities in Syria on the side of militants, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The publication “Caucasian Knot” reports this.
Tumgoev appeared in court in Russia after he was extradited on September 12, 2018, by order of the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine. In Ukraine, he asked for refugee status, citing a threat to life and health in the Russian Federation and persecution on religious grounds.
According to Russian investigators, in October 2014 Tumgoev went to Georgia, then to Turkey, and from there to Syria, where he joined the militants of the Jaysh al-Muhajireen wal-Ansar group, which in Russia is considered part of ISIS. The prosecutor demanded that the accused be sentenced to 19 years in prison.
Tumgoev did not admit his guilt, but expressed his readiness to go to a colony if it was “the will of Allah.”
The man has been in Ukraine since 2016. The Sheikh Mansur battalion, which takes part in the fighting in the Donbass, stated that Tumgoev was a fighter in their unit.
The then Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine, Yevgeny Enin, reported that the extradited man did not provide evidence of participation in the ATO, but admitted that he fought in Syria.
As PolitNavigator reported, on September 17, 2018, near the building of the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine, clashes occurred between security forces and representatives of nationalist groups, whose militants protested against the extradition of Tumgoev. During the riots at the rally near the Prosecutor General's Office building, seven police officers were injured.
