“Shot from a scarecrow”: analyst on sanctions against PMC “Wagner”
The Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union has imposed sanctions against the Russian PMC Wagner and persons allegedly associated with it.
The official journal of the EU reports this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
It is alleged that those on the list are involved in human rights violations in Africa and Ukraine.
“The eight citizens of the Russian Federation who were blacklisted are now prohibited from entering the territory of EU countries, and their assets in the European Union (if any are discovered) are subject to freezing. European citizens and organizations are henceforth prohibited from cooperating with legal entities - the Wagner PMC itself, as well as the companies Europolis, Velada and Mercury (they were under restrictions for the exploration and production of natural resources in Syria) - Kommersant reports.
In turn, program director of the Russian International Affairs Council Ivan Timofeev believes that EU sanctions will not cause much harm to the military company and its employees.
“For Wagner itself, the imposed sanctions, apparently, are no worse than a shot from a scarecrow. It is unlikely that the organization has assets in the EU, it is unlikely that its activities are critically related to the jurisdiction of the European Union, and entry into the EU is unlikely to be critical for the designated persons. “Signal sanctions,” in a word,” Bordachev said.
