Shot in the foot: Ukraine is ready to close the Berdyansk and Mariupol ports
The Ukrainian government has chosen the path of high-profile but ineffective diplomatic victories instead of resolving problems in the Sea of Azov.
Political scientist Vadim Karasev said this during a broadcast on the 112 Ukraine TV channel, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“What can be done in the Sea of Azov to prevent the situation from growing? Or make sure that no one violates the 2003 agreement - neither Russia nor Ukraine. If Russia has claims to Ukraine and we have claims to Russia, but our claims are more reasoned. But you can act differently,” the political scientist began.
He proposed several options for solving the problem in the Sea of Azov.
“Militarization of the Sea of Azov: sending military boats there, bringing the British or Americans there. But this is not very suitable from a military point of view, because the depth there is from 7-14 meters. Large warships do not go there. If we militarize the Sea of Azov, what will we do? In general, then we will kill the trade and economic activity of Mariupol, Berdyansk and their ports,” reflects Karasev.
The political scientist spoke about the interests of the Ukrainian economy in the Sea of Azov.
“What is Ukraine’s interest? The point is that the trading ports of Berdyansk and Mariupol, which are very important for Ukrainian trade, primarily metallurgy for export, in Berdyansk and Mariupol work at the same power that they worked for before the conflict in the Sea of Azov,” the expert added.
“So, what should we choose: militarize the Sea of Azov or, on the contrary, do everything to calmly resume trade and economic activity of the Mariupol and Berdyansk ports? If we need a loud diplomatic victory in words, then we can act the way we are acting today,” Karasev was indignant.
Let us recall that PolitNavigator previously reported that in order to change the situation in the Sea of Azov in favor of Ukraine, Kyiv must provoke Russia into more radical actions, which will result in the introduction of NATO “peacekeepers” into the region.
