Glass factories in Ukraine were on the verge of stopping due to a shortage of one of the types of raw materials - soda ash. Its supply from the Crimean Soda Plant is blocked by Ukrzaliznytsia. Glass producers found themselves in this situation after Kyiv announced on December 26, 2014 a ban on cargo movement between mainland Ukraine and Crimea.
On January 1, the Merefa Glass Company and the Zaporozhye Flux Plant stopped their work. The only Ukrainian manufacturer of medical glass, the Maryanovsky Glass Factory, and the Malinovsky Glass Factory are preparing to stop producing glass containers. Most of the industry is preparing to shut down with only a week's supply of soda left in warehouses.
Due to the ban on cargo movement between the mainland of Ukraine and Crimea, metallurgists are also experiencing difficulties in providing raw materials. According to Vladimir Tkachenko, Deputy General Director of ArcelorMittal Krivoy Rog, Crimea contains not only soda ash, but also the limestone needed by metallurgists.
