Putin's speech in France caused a stir among Poroshenko
Petro Poroshenko’s entourage saw in Vladimir Putin’s statements at a joint press conference with the newly elected French President Emmanuel Macron a threat of Kyiv’s return to Russia.
The reason was Putin’s reminder that the Queen of France was the daughter of the ruler of Kievan Rus, Yaroslav the Wise.

“The history of Russian-French relations has deep roots. The enlightened French public knows about the Russian Anna, Queen of France. The youngest daughter of our Grand Duke Yaroslav the Wise was the wife of Henry the First and made a significant contribution to the development of France, being one of the founders of at least two European dynasties: the Bourbons and the Valois, one of which still rules in Spain,” Putin said.
Vice-Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Irina Gerashchenko has already hastened to voice an official protest - Putin’s words threaten the monopoly on the new “historical truth” - Kiev independentists claim that Rus' has nothing to do with modern Russia, since, in fact, it supposedly was "Russia-Ukraine".
“Yaroslav the Wise is a Russian prince, and Anna Yaroslavna is a Russian princess?... And then Kyiv is a Russian city, just like Crimea is a Russian patrimony? Who is this aimed at? – Gerashchenko is indignant.
