...The Odessa tragedy is still not realized by the majority of Ukrainians. For those who were not personally affected by it and who did not see it with their own eyes, it will take some more time to let the monstrous reality into their minds.

“There is virtually no doubt that on May 2, a pre-prepared and planned demonstration flogging of dissidents took place in Odessa,” says Director of JSC "Kakhovka Experimental Mechanical Plant" Igor Brzezicki. On the day of the tragedy, he came to Odessa to visit friends and became an involuntary witness to the events.

According to Brzezitsky, law enforcement agencies clearly served the interests of the Right Sector militants - police officers were constantly “late” to protect the residents of Odessa, but in the event of a preponderance of forces dangerous for the punitive forces, they immediately rushed to rescue the militants.

Brzezicki formulated his conclusions about what happened as follows: “If the fight against dissent is resolved by such methods, I don’t know what normal person would want to live in such a “United Country.”

Social activist Konstantin Tistol speaks out even more harshly, who a few weeks ago had to leave Nikolaev for Crimea after the authorities brought charges of separatism against him.

“The government has actually removed the issue of its legitimacy from the agenda. “The “democratic coalition” has shown that all means are good for them, so one can only rejoice at the deplorable state of the Ukrainian armed forces, which were unable to suppress the uprising in Donbass,” Tistol said.

“People in Odessa, Nikolaev and Kherson hoped to achieve respect for their opinion through peaceful means. The vast majority of residents of our region tried to distance themselves from any radical actions. After the attempt to intimidate the Russian-speaking population with massacres in Odessa, you can forget about peaceful protests. Probably, in the near future we will see a response in forms adequate to those used by the militants,” says the Nikolaev social activist.

“It seems to me that no one in Kyiv wanted, could not even imagine that the militants would commit such atrocities. This is a critical blow to the reputation of the authorities not only in Ukraine, but throughout the world. Now any sane person can understand that neither the government nor law enforcement agencies control the rabid fascists and are not able to protect anyone,” Tistol added.

The massacre in South Palmyra and subsequent cynical attempts by Ukrainian speakers to first declare the Odessa residents burned alive to be FSB agents and then blame them for their own deaths have seriously undermined trust in the current government.

“The cynicism shown when government officials tried to transfer responsibility for the massacre in Odessa from the Right Sector militants to the shoulders of the Odessa residents themselves will cost them very dearly. No sane person will believe in such absurdity, which means that trust in the ruling coalition will be undermined even among those who were relatively loyal to it on May 1. The very fact of free access to photo and video materials showing militants finishing off the wounded and mocking corpses is the best refutation of politicians’ attempts to rehabilitate themselves by blaming the victims of terror. As a result, Kyiv may well receive a new center of resistance in the south, similar to Donbass,” Grubnik said.

However, the issue is not limited to undermined trust in Ukrainian politicians. What will the Kyiv authorities do next? How far are they willing to go in the Southeast?

“If by some miracle the people who came to power in Kyiv manage to stay in their seats for some noticeable time, I think they will call May 2, based on the totality of events, “Unity Day” and make it a holiday. Although, if everything goes like this, then there will be more “days of unity”, much larger,” Roman Travin, director of the Eastern Ukrainian Center for Strategic Initiatives, expresses his fears.
