Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Transnistria, former special representative of the President of the PMR on relations with Ukraine Vladimir Yasterbchak does not share the optimism of a number of experts about the change in the political course of this country after the victory of Vladimir Zelensky in the elections.

Speaking at a meeting of the ISPIRR discussion club in Tiraspol, he introduced “tar notes into the aroma of universal hope.” The expert believes that the Americans will begin to set boundaries for the new president immediately.

“This was very clearly announced just a couple of hours after the first election data was announced. The American side specified certain points from Mr. Trump’s congratulations to Mr. Zelensky. It was said, with reference to Kurt Volker, who rebroadcast this conversation, that the American side will continue to “support Ukraine’s efforts to protect its sovereignty and counter aggression.” In my opinion, this is a very clear framework within which Mr. Zelensky will have to act, at least this is what is expected of him,” Yastrebchak said.

The expert does not believe that the new president will be a “light version” of Poroshenko; he is inclined to believe that in the near future “everyone will see Poroshenko hard,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Zelensky cannot engage in activities that will begin to violate his own election rhetoric and his own framework, which he has outlined for himself. Very quickly after the inauguration we will see Zelensky in camouflage and other related things. He will have to prove that he is not Putin’s protege, that he is not a conductor of Russian policy, because Ukrainian society is not yet ready for this,” said the ex-diplomat.

He also recalled that there are serious institutional frameworks that Donald Trump could tell Vladimir Zelensky about.

“Mr. Trump’s presidency, as planned by him and his team, was also supposed to begin with a warming of relations with the Russian Federation. But then, miraculously, he had a wonderful barrier detachment behind him in the form of the American parliament and Congress, who very quickly explained to the president that there are certain boundaries beyond which the president cannot go. Mr. Zelensky also has powerful structures behind him, which will be difficult to dissolve in a short time, no matter how much he would like.

They will try to make sure that there is some kind of support, protection of those values that have been put into people’s heads in Ukraine over the past five years. In this situation, Zelensky will not be able to deviate from what he said during the election campaign, especially taking into account how many hot heads, how many weapons are walking around Ukraine and that this is quite easily directed with batons in the right direction. Remember how they chased the current president around the country,” the expert noted.

He also drew attention to the church issue, which “is very important for modern Ukraine and will be a point of contention for a long time.”

“It was in the 95th Quarter that you could joke about a thermos, but now, when the president is already a president, you need to carry a tomos in your arms and praise Filaret. You can’t just give up all this on Inauguration Day; you’ll have to continue it somehow. How to deal with this is the question,” Yasterbczak concluded.
