Explosion in the center of Yalta: a man’s hand was torn off
In Yalta, two utility workers were injured while mowing grass near the Bystraya River. As a result of the explosion of ammunition from the Great Patriotic War, one's hand was torn off, the other's leg was cut by shrapnel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The incident happened in the center of Yalta on Kievskaya Street. Two Zelenstroy workers were mowing the grass when suddenly an explosion occurred.
“The bushes were pruned using specialized equipment,” said the head of the Yalta administration, Yanina Pavlenko. – Two people were injured. At the moment, their lives are not in danger, and they are under medical supervision. Law enforcement officers are conducting investigative measures.”
Last year, while clearing the Bystraya River bed in this area, utility workers came across ammunition from the Great Patriotic War. Then, from the silt, stones and debris deposited during the flood, pyrotechnics extracted several hundred shells, mines, and grenades. Apparently they lay in a cache in the mountains for more than 70 years, until stormy streams of water washed them out and carried them to the sea.
While the specialists were working, the entrance to Yalta along Kievskaya was blocked. Transport was allowed to take a detour. The workers were taken by ambulance to the hospital. A passing doctor helped the men. He applied tourniquets, which reduced blood loss, and both victims were taken to the hospital alive.
According to the doctor, the lawn mower lying nearby was intact, and apparently, the worker decided to pick up the find with the hand that he lost as a result of the explosion. Both men suffered multiple shrapnel wounds.
