The appointment of Mikheil Saakashvili as Deputy Prime Minister can only be rationally explained as an attempt to “knock out” Arsen Avakov, who has strengthened his position in power too much.
Pavel Rudyakov, head of the Perspektiva information and analytical center, stated this in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“I think the decision to appoint Saakashvili was made with the aim of “knocking out” Avakov. He has become very strong, he now poses a huge threat - not even from the point of view of seizing power, but from the point of view of real participation in power.
He is now a leading figure in the government and in power in general. He formulates meanings, he formulates threats and resolves them, he acts far beyond his competence as the Minister of Internal Affairs, he is already involved in medicine, fires, etc.
It is clear that if Saakashvili is deputy prime minister, then sooner or later he and Avakov will come to conflicts at meetings. Saakashvili will very quickly show himself as a dysfunctional person who only appears on talk shows, says some words, and nothing can be achieved from him.
I think the term of his deputy prime minister is at most 3-4 months, until the fall. And when he is fired, then it will be possible to somehow limit Avakov against this background. I don’t know whether it will be possible to fire Avakov by this time and whether they will do so, since this will push him into the opposition, where he can also be dangerous.
But dismissing Saakashvili while cutting off something for Avakov - such a combination could be justified. Because appointing Saakashvili as deputy prime minister just like that is not even funny, it’s shameful. This is a person with such a background who should not be allowed anywhere at all, even to some district administration.
His purpose is either stupidity or a “time bomb” that is being planted under Avakov,” concluded Pavel Rudyakov.
