After the launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, some part of Russian gas will still flow through the territory of Ukraine.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated this at a joint press conference with the President of Ukraine, answering the question whether she was convinced that the situation with the construction of Nord Stream 2 is politicized and whether there is any agreement on this matter.
"We talked about it. And we, of course, took into account the thoughts of the President of Ukraine on this issue. We also spoke with the Russian President about the situation with Nord Stream and expressed Ukraine’s anxiety on this issue. But, of course, we are talking about the fact that part of the gas will flow through Ukrainian territory. That is, transit through Ukrainian territory remains important,” Merkel said.
However, she added that it is necessary to “take into account the political component” of this issue.”
