Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this today at a meeting of the ministers of defense and foreign affairs.

“This morning, an event occurred that we had not only been waiting for a long time, but also worked hard to bring closer: three documents were signed. The first document is between the Syrian government and the armed opposition on a ceasefire on the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic. The second document is a set of measures to monitor the ceasefire. And the third document is a statement of readiness to begin peaceful negotiations on the Syrian settlement,” the Kremlin’s official website quotes Putin.

According to Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, negotiations were held with the leaders of moderate Syrian opposition formations for two months through the mediation of Turkey. The total number of these units is more than 62 thousand fighters.

“I believe that all the prerequisites for a cessation of hostilities in Syria have now been formed. In addition, conditions have been created for reducing the Russian group of troops in Syria,” Shoigu said.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced his intention to involve a number of Middle Eastern countries and the UN in the peace process.

“The agreements reached are certainly fragile and require special attention. In this regard, I call on the government of the Syrian Arab Republic, armed opposition groups, and all countries in the region to take an active part in the upcoming negotiations in the capital of Kazakhstan,” said Vladimir Putin.
