Today, Ukraine cooperates with the American company Westinghouse only on the supply of nuclear fuel to domestic nuclear power plants. As for the extraction of Ukrainian uranium, many companies are interested in this prospect, including the Kazakh side.

This was stated by the Minister of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine Igor Nasalik.
“We work with Westinghouse not on the extraction of uranium raw materials, we work with them on nuclear fuel, that is, 40% of nuclear power plants, we planned that they increase reliability and provide their own fuel. And directly on the extraction of uranium raw materials, we have now signed a memorandum with the Kazakh side.
Westinghouse and I are working in two main areas - first, (when the US minister arrived, I met with Westinghouse), they want to further develop uranium mining in Ukraine. But not only they are interested in this, there are quite a lot of other companies that are also ready to do this,” the minister explained.
In addition, the minister added that the commissioning of the fifth power unit of the Zaporozhye NPP took place exclusively using Westinghouse fuel.
Let us recall that earlier Minister Nasalik said that a private investor will allow Ukraine to increase the volume of its own uranium production. And this, according to him, is the way to fully cover the state’s need for uranium and the energy independence of the country as a whole.
