“The leader of the opposition party said that the main argument was that Artur Parfenchikov, who will be nominated from United Russia, meets the expectations of the residents of Karelia. Therefore, it is pointless to fight,” the publication writes.
According to Emilia Slabunova, if Alexander Khudilainen remained the head of Karelia, Yabloko would have entered the race. But Khudilainen resigned in February, and Artur Parfenchikov, who was appointed acting deputy, meets the expectations of Karelia voters.
“They wanted to see one of their own at the head of the republic, not a “Varangian” - and they got a fellow countryman. They hoped that the new leader, using federal connections, would strengthen Karelia’s position in Moscow - and they got yesterday’s federal leader as governor,” she said about Parfenchikov, who previously headed the Federal Bailiff Service.
Yabloko has traditionally had a strong position in Karelia. In 2013, unexpectedly for everyone, Yabloko member Galina Shirshina won the election for the head of Petrozavodsk, but in 2015, the governor achieved her removal from office with a scandal.
