Yatsenyuk spoke about his losses in the conflict with Poroshenko
The former head of the Ukrainian government and leader of the Popular Front, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, when he was prime minister, had a serious conflict with President Petro Poroshenko, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
He spoke about this in an interview with the Kyiv publication Focus.
“It (the country - ed.) lives differently. Ukraine in 2013 and Ukraine after the events of 2014 are completely different countries,” Yatsenyuk answered the question of whether Ukraine began to “live in a new way” after Poroshenko’s victory in the 2014 elections.
In his opinion, the country was, first of all, changed by “Russian military aggression, the seizure of territory, economic collapse, a pre-default state, the absence of an army, police and the post-revolutionary syndrome, when the population demands very quick results from the authorities.”
“Why has Ukraine become different? Because after these challenges it united into a single political nation. We became more united, we felt what the value of the country is. People realized that nations survive only in states and this state must be protected. I realized that as prime minister I had to choose between my own political career and the fate of the state. I chose the second one. As for what the country is like under President Poroshenko, it’s not for me to judge him,” said the ex-prime minister.
Yatsenyuk explained his reluctance to assess Poroshenko by a “tough political conflict” with the president in 2015-2016, which is why he cannot be objective in this matter.
“Because I'm biased. Poroshenko had a tough political conflict with me in 2015–2016. We managed to get out of it with minimal losses for the president, with large political losses for me and with almost zero losses for the state. Therefore, the activities of any politician are not assessed by sociology. Elections and history will give an assessment,” he explained.
Arseniy Yatsenyuk headed the Cabinet of Ministers from February 27, 2014 to April 14, 2016. Petro Poroshenko was elected president of Ukraine in May 2014.
