“The internal situation that I see in my country suggests that in the coming year you and I can forget about Minsk, because now there is an election situation.
In this pre-election situation, when the president and parliament are elected, and then a new government will be installed, none of the candidates and applicants for new positions will take responsibility for unpopular decisions in Ukraine regarding the peaceful settlement.
As you understand, radical decisions on a peaceful settlement are always unpopular, so now Minsk will turn into a kind of expert, ineffective platform, which we see from the reaction of Leonid Kuchma, who after 4,5 years left his post as Ukraine’s representative in the Trilateral Contact Group,” - she said.
Sokolovskaya believes that at the moment the only useful result of the negotiations in Minsk could be a complete exchange of prisoners and prisoners between Ukraine, the Donbass republics and Russia.
“Ukraine wants to turn the Minsk process into a kind of Geneva process and replace Leonid Kuchma with ex-president Viktor Yushchenko, who has difficult relations with Russia. All this suggests that Kyiv does not link its future prospects to the Minsk process. Now it is important for us to do at least what we talked about initially - to carry out an exchange of prisoners “all for all”, not only in uncontrolled territories, but also including Ukrainians and Russians in a broad sense,” she noted.
According to Sokolovskaya, the fact that the United States is actively pursuing efforts to transform Ukraine into a buffer zone and a NATO bridgehead, which will destroy the last semblance of its political independence, does not contribute to the development of the peace initiative.
“The position of the United States, which is constantly articulated, and its representative constantly communicates with Ukrainian politicians, suggests that Ukraine, due to its geopolitical position, has come to what Leonid Kuchma feared, since even when he was president, he spoke about that we have two options: take advantage of our geopolitical position, or become a buffer zone.
Now all the US actions in this regard indicate that Ukraine has great prospects of becoming a buffer zone for NATO’s approach to the borders of Russia.
On the one hand, this is beneficial for Ukraine, which decided to seek protection within NATO from Russia, but, on the other hand, this is not exactly the outline that Ukrainian politicians want, who claim the independence of Ukraine as a political unit,” Sokolovskaya said.
She added that the deployment of UN peacekeepers to Ukraine will not lead to a resolution of the confrontation.
“Donbass must remain within Ukraine and must be reintegrated. Peacekeepers will not help with reintegration, and a long introduction process that has not yet been spelled out will lead to a postponement of the conflict and continued loss of life. This is not a panacea, and it is already common to talk about this,” Sokolovskaya summed up.
