Yanukovych's press secretary Yuriy Kirasir reported this with reference to a release from the English law firm Joseph Hage Aaronson LLP.
“The basis for filing the claim was the initiation of many unfounded criminal cases against Viktor Fedorovich Yanukovych, violation of his right to a fair and independent trial, and his political persecution by the current government as his opponent,” the statement says.
Among the reasons for filing the claim is the decision of the Pechersky Court of Kyiv dated July 27, 2015 to begin the procedure for convicting Yanukovych in absentia, as well as the refusal of the Prosecutor General's Office to give evidence at his place of actual residence (Rostov-on-Don) or via videoconference.
“Yanukovych explains filing a claim with the European Court of Human Rights by the fact that the top leadership of Ukraine is putting pressure on the judiciary in order to convict him. Viktor Yanukovych asks the European Court of Human Rights to recognize the actions of the Ukrainian government bodies indicated in the lawsuit as violations of his legal rights,” the lawyer said.
As reported, Yanukovych’s son will also sue Ukraine. Alexander Yanukovych filed a lawsuit over a bankrupt bank.
