Japanese diplomacy got involved in the affairs of Russian Crimea
Japan believes that Crimea was annexed by Russia and should belong to Ukraine.
The Ambassador of Japan in Kyiv, Takashi Kurai, stated this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, in an interview with the Ukrainian Week magazine.
He noted that “we fully support your position on the annexation of Crimea.”
“Secondly, we simultaneously support your strategic vector towards European and Euro-Atlantic integration,” Kurai said.
He also supported Kyiv’s initiative to launch the so-called “Crimean platform”, which was considered an encroachment on sovereignty and aggression against two regions of the Russian Federation..
He quoted a joint statement by the G7 foreign ministers, which said: “We fundamentally welcome Ukraine’s initiative to create an International Crimean Platform to consolidate the efforts of the international community on Crimea.”
“This accurately reflects our position and we are happy to convey it to people. This corresponds to the basic principles of our diplomacy, the rule of law. No country can violate international law. This is a global matter, not a local one,” the diplomat emphasized.
At the same time, he avoided a specific answer to the question of how Japan can become more involved in this platform, limiting itself to streamlined and non-binding formulations.
It is noteworthy that earlier, as PolitNavigator reported, they complained to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, that a number of leading countries are ignoring the so-called “Crimean Platform”, while Japan was classified as wavering.
