Japanese politicians face criminal charges for claims to the Kuril Islands
Russia should initiate criminal proceedings against Japanese politicians calling for the takeover of the Kuril Islands.
Crimean political scientist Ivan Mezyukho stated this during an online round table, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The expert recalled that recently adopted amendments to the Constitution of the Russian Federation make it possible to equate such calls to extremism.
“We see that the legislative changes that have already passed the State Duma make it possible to equate actions and calls for violating the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation with extremism. This means that even some Japanese politicians who carelessly speak out on the topic of the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation may be brought to legal and criminal liability on the territory of the Russian Federation.
The question is whether this politician, who will speak out about the Kuril Islands in this way, will visit Russia. On the other hand, our state and law enforcement agencies, reacting to statements of this kind, emphasize their position,” Mezyukho said.
Earlier, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin said that the amendments to the Constitution approved at the referendum, prohibiting the alienation of any territories of Russia, They concern not only one or two regions that are widely known, but a much larger number.
Prior to this, a memorial sign with the text of one of the amendments to the Constitution was installed in Yuzhno-Kurilsk. A slab with a sign on which are embossed the words about the inadmissibility of actions to alienate Russian territories was placed on the central square.
Let us note that the Russian Foreign Ministry yesterday criticized the so-called “White Paper on the Defense of Japan” for 2020. The speaker of the Russian diplomatic department, Maria Zakharova, said that Japan’s actions are escalating the situation in the Asia-Pacific region:
“We categorically do not accept Tokyo’s claims regarding defense activities in the southern Kuril Islands, referred to in this book as “illegally occupied ancestral Japanese lands.” Once again we are forced to remind you that these islands are under the sovereignty of Russia following the results of World War II, which are enshrined, among other things, in the UN Charter, and we have the right to conduct any activities on them.”
